The concept of witness spans different literary genres and times of composition. It is not confined to the Old Testament but is also found and expanded upon in rabbinic and New Testament literature. In the New Testament, one of the preferred terms for “believers” is &ogr;ι μαρτυρ&ogr;ι, the witnesses. What is behind the concept of witness and why did it become so meaningful across time and audiences? This study identifies a witness motif and claims that it is deeply rooted in the laws of testimony in the Torah.
